Can I paint my Garage Door?

Can I paint my Garage Door?

Yes! You can repaint your garage door! My Garage Depot has some ideas and guidelines to help make your DIY project easier. These tips are only for repainting a metal door and not a wooden door. We hope you find these ideas useful.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE THE PAINT FOR GARAGE DOOR

You can use paint with Primer built in. How much paint you are going to need depends on the size of your door. Typically, a double garage door needs about a gallon of paint to cover it. Here are some tips: Use a matte finish or semi-gloss latex paint for your top coat. If your garage door faces the south the sun will cause darker colors to fade sooner.

PREP WORK BEFORE YOU START PAINTING

Getting your door cleaned and ready for painting is key to a long-lasting paint job. If your door is dirty or has oil on it, it won’t be long and you’ll find your paint peeling. You really want to do great prep work, it will be worth every minute of your time. Here’s what you need to do to extend the life of your paint job: Wash your door with some cleaner which can remove any dirt, oil, or chalking. Rinse the door thoroughly with clean water. Give it time to dry. If there are any indentations on your door use the 220 grit sandpaper to clean the indentation. Remove any dust with a damp cloth.

START PAINTING

Apply the top coat paint and give it time to dry. Then again apply another coat to get rid of the old colour. You can try another coat if needed until you get the color effect you need.
